Under the direction of the Owner and Lead Mechanic, the Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) Mechanic is responsible for performing service, maintenance, repair, and preventative maintenance work on department apparatus and other vehicles. Assists other senior mechanics with maintenance and repair work on department equipment as needed. Work requires high degree of technical knowledge, as well as the ability to exercise independent judgment when determining repair methods.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:*Due to the nature of working with emergency services, employees will occasionally be required to perform overtime and 24 – 72 hours on call duties*
- Performs detailed 90 day BIT Inspections
- Repairs and rebuilds gasoline and diesel engines, drive trains, and chassis components.
- Services and repairs HVAC systems and other electrical components.
- Performs preventative maintenance tasks and diagnoses problems on all types of fire district vehicles and equipment.
- Troubleshoots hydraulic and electrical problems.
- Operates department vehicles as needed for inspection and testing.
- Uses common air and hand tools for the maintenance and repair of fire district vehicles.
- Prepares and maintains accurate records of maintenance work.
- Maintains a clean and safe working environment.
- Operates other equipment such as a hoist jack, overhead crane, and tools to fabricate, service, and repair vehicles.
- Assists senior level fire mechanics when necessary.
- Performs physical inventories of service truck parts, tools and supplies.
- Communicates with co-workers, supervisors and district personnel to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
- Prepares written repair order comment sheets and reports regarding repairs made and equipment status.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Combination of training, education and experience equivalent to four (4) years of journey-level mechanic experience; OR four (4) years as an equipment service worker with
- demonstrated equipment mechanic abilities and/or apprenticeship as a mechanic.
- Valid unrestricted Class A California Driver's License.
- EVT certification. Or California Level 3 Fire Mechanic. Qualified candidates who do not have an EVT certification may be given two (2) years from the time of appointment to complete required coursework.
- Airbrake Certified
- Knowledge of the principles of internal combustion and diesel engine operation.
- Knowledge of methods, materials, tools and standard practices for automotive and truck repair.
- Thorough understanding of the hazards and safety precautions required during vehicle repair and maintenance.
- Knowledge of methods of basic fabrication.
- Knowledge of electronic control systems (i.e., engine, transmission, anti-lock brake system, etc.).
- Desirable:
- Advanced fire apparatus maintenance and repair including the principals of internal combustion and diesel engine operations.
- Knowledge of all components of modern fire apparatus.
- Knowledge of principals of fire pump troubleshooting and repair.
- Skill in the use and care of tools and equipment associated with the servicing of vehicles and motorized equipment.
- Skill in service and repair of air brakes and air systems.
- Ability to diagnose and repair operational problems on automotive equipment.
- Ability to perform preventative maintenance tasks on a variety of vehicles and motorized equipment.
- Ability to understand and effectively carry out verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to read and interpret service manuals, schematics, charts, etc.
- Ability to diagnose and repair electronic control systems.
- Ability to meet scheduling and attendance requirements.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, and other fire department personnel.
- High school or equivalent
- Required licenses or certifications:
- Airbrake Certification
- CA Level 3 Fire Mechanic
- EVT Certification
- CA Class A Driver's License
